The Axe Principle: relief, dignity and opportunity

A well-known prophetic narration about giving someone the means to stand on their own — and how it shapes the way we work.

One of the principles that inspires The Abdul Majid Foundation comes from a well-known narration of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). A man came seeking assistance. The Prophet (peace be upon him) helped him meet his immediate need, then helped him obtain an axe and encouraged him to gather and sell firewood rather than continue relying on charity alone.

The lesson was not simply about giving aid. It was about restoring dignity, creating opportunity and enabling long-term independence.

Relief first, then a route forward

Notice the order. The immediate need was not ignored — it was met. Only then came the tool, and the encouragement to use it. Compassion and empowerment were not in tension; one made room for the other.

That is how we try to work. We want to be there in the hard moment, and we want to help people reach a point where they no longer need us. Relief restores today; opportunity protects tomorrow.

Compassion in the moment, empowerment for the future.

Out of respect for accuracy, we are careful not to overstate a source. The Foundation will include the full verified narration and reference once confirmed. The principle, however, is clear — and it runs through everything we hope to do.
