Abdul MajidFoundation

In loving memory

Dr Hafiz Abdul Majid

Academic · Educator · Hafiz of the Qur'an · rahimahullah

A scholar who dedicated his life to knowledge, learning and service — and whose belief that education transforms lives is the foundation on which this charity is built.

His life

A life devoted to knowledge

Dr Hafiz Abdul Majid was, above all, a man of knowledge. He earned his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Southampton and went on to a distinguished career in academia, lecturing internationally across the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia and Libya, including at Queen Mary University of London.

Teaching was not merely his profession — it was his calling. He spent his life in education and academic development, guiding students and colleagues alike. Later in life he founded a successful private tuition service, continuing in a more personal setting the work that had always defined him: helping others to learn, to grow and to reach their potential.

Alongside his scientific scholarship, he was a Hafiz of the Qur'an — having committed the entire Qur'an to memory — and a man of deep and sincere faith. He was devoted to both academic and Islamic education, and saw no contradiction between the two: for him, the pursuit of knowledge, worldly and sacred, was a single, lifelong journey.

To the many who knew him, he was a source of knowledge, guidance and learning — an intellectual with a particular love for science and chemistry, and a trusted voice on matters of faith and of the wider world. He believed, profoundly, that education is one of the most powerful ways to transform lives and uplift whole communities.

His belief, our ethos

Education creates long-term change

We believe the most lasting charity is not a handout, but an opportunity. Rather than simply giving money away, the Foundation creates genuine, legitimate opportunities — educating children, and equipping people with the skills to support themselves and their families.

  • We educate children in places where good schooling is scarce — and support learners here in the UK who lack the education or skills to get on in life.
  • We invest in both conventional learning and practical, non-conventional skills that lead to real, lasting independence.
  • We nurture Islamic education too — including Hifz of the Qur'an — honouring the faith and the man who inspired this work.
It reflects a timeless value at the heart of Islamic giving: the most dignified help is not a handout, but the means to earn — restoring a person's independence rather than deepening their dependence on others.

His legacy

Continuing his life's work

The Abdul Majid Foundation has been established by his children, in his memory, as a continuing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah) on his behalf — and as a gift to everyone it serves.

We carry his legacy forward in the way that would have meant the most to him: through education. The Foundation works to give children access to learning where good schooling is scarce, to equip people with the skills to support themselves and their families, and to nurture Islamic education — including Hifz of the Qur'an — for a new generation.

This education-led mission sits at the heart of a wider commitment to relieve poverty and hardship — orphan care, refugees, food and shelter, clean water and emergency relief — offered to all who need it, on the basis of need alone. Because his life was built on education, so is this Foundation. Every opportunity we create is a continuing reward for him, and a gift to those who need it most.
